Show Title: San Juan Mountain Map Collection
The first time I ever painted on a map wasn’t intentional. I was sitting at the base of Angel Peak in the Wind River Wilderness. I typically bring watercolors with me on all my adventures - because painting outside is one of my favorite joys in life. I’d run out of watercolor paper. All I had was a weathered map my hiking group used to navigate our path. Once I began painting on it, I was immediately drawn to the texture, depth, and story the map brought to my painting. Since then, it’s one my favorite surfaces to paint on.
This display/exhibit is a collection of paintings inspired by the ever-moving, jagged mountains surrounding us here in the San Juans. Every map tells its own story – and every mountain holds centuries of stories within. Just like any adventure in the mountains, unexpected events happen due to uncontrollable elements – rain, wind, storms and blistering heat. This collection of mountain map paintings reflects my time and experiences in the mountains, where I willingly let go of control. I let the paint drip. I freely apply expressive and messy paint strokes. I paint with awe-inspiring colors – the dreamlike colors you see right as the sunrises and sets.
These mountains hold magic and stories. Can you feel it?
