Live Music: John Reeve

  • Fenceline Cider 141 South Main Street Mancos, CO, 81328 United States (map)

As a songwriter who has escaped the borders of Texas, but maybe not it's artistic demands, John Reeve blends the weirdness of the desert southwest and the singer/songwriter traditions of communities like the Kerrville Folk Festival.

Echoing the honky-tonk ethos of folks like Doug Sahm, the psychedelia of the 13th Floor Elevators, and a heartfelt western swing, all of John's musical ventures enjoy a bluesy, off-the-cuff improvisational feel even when the songs are century-old deep-cut standards.

As a performer, John has fronted bands for over 25 years, but spent a lot of those years backing up other musicians. You could have seen John touring in Norway as a double bass player, traveling in New Mexico with a pedal steel guitar, sitting behind a piano with jazz, jam, and blues bands small-and-big. As an engineer or stage manager you might have found John back stage at the Kerrville Folk Fest or the Four Corners Folk Fest in Pagosa Springs, CO.

Most recently, focusing on songwriting has led to the that runs a broad gamut as well, from goofy bluegrass to country standards, from electronica to indy-folk. But a lot of folks think John is best when encountered holding a guitar, playing original songs, and telling stories that have evoked both laughter and tears from audiences from San Antonio to Santa Fe.
